What are NR4 and NR7 Patterns?

NR4 and NR7 are Narrow Range candlestick patterns that signal a period of low volatility — a compression that often precedes a large directional move.

NR4: Today's high-to-low range is the smallest of the last 4 days — mild contraction.
NR7: Today's high-to-low range is the smallest of the last 7 days — stronger contraction, higher probability setup.
Contraction %: How much tighter today's range is vs the 7-bar average. Higher % = tighter squeeze = more explosive potential.
Breakout level: Enter long above today's High. Enter short below today's Low. Place stop at the opposite level.
Bias: EMA 20/50 alignment — favours trading the breakout in the direction of the underlying trend.

How to use NR4/NR7

Look for NR7 stocks that also have a trending bias (Bullish or Bearish). If bias is Bullish and RSI is between 40–60, a breakout above the high is a high-probability setup. Combine with volume confirmation — a breakout candle with above-average volume is ideal.

What is the Narrow Range Strategy?

Narrow Range Strategy is a breakout-based trading strategy based on the principle that volatility contraction usually precedes volatility expansion. When a stock's daily range narrows to its smallest in 4 or 7 days, it signals a potential explosive move in either direction.

NR4 Trading Strategy

NR4 (Narrow Range of 4 Days) identifies stocks where today's high-to-low range is smaller than the previous three days' ranges. This compression signals a potential breakout. Enter long if price breaks above today's high, enter short if price breaks below today's low.

How to Identify an NR4 Day

Gather the high and low data of the past four days.
Calculate the price range (High minus Low) for each day.
If today's range is smaller than all of the past three days, it is an NR4 pattern.
Once confirmed, look for a buy entry when price moves up past today's high, and a sell entry when price breaks below today's low.

NR7 Trading Strategy

NR7 (Narrow Range of 7 Days) is a stronger version of NR4 — today's range must be the smallest of the last seven days. NR7 breakouts carry higher probability because the volatility compression is more pronounced. A bullish breakout occurs when price moves above the NR7 candle's high; a bearish breakout when price falls below the NR7 candle's low.

How to Identify an NR7 Day

Gather high and low data for the past seven trading days.
Calculate the range of all seven candles individually.
If today's candle range is smaller than all six previous candles, it is an NR7 pattern.
A breakout above the NR7 high signals a bullish move; a breakdown below the NR7 low signals a bearish move.
