What are NR4 and NR7 Patterns?

NR4 and NR7 are Narrow Range candlestick patterns that signal a period of low volatility — a compression that often precedes a large directional move.

  • NR4: Today's high-to-low range is the smallest of the last 4 days — mild contraction.
  • NR7: Today's high-to-low range is the smallest of the last 7 days — stronger contraction, higher probability setup.
  • Contraction %: How much tighter today's range is vs the 7-bar average. Higher % = tighter squeeze = more explosive potential.
  • Breakout level: Enter long above today's High. Enter short below today's Low. Place stop at the opposite level.
  • Bias: EMA 20/50 alignment — favours trading the breakout in the direction of the underlying trend.
