What Are Bollinger Bands?

Bollinger Bands is a popular technical indicator developed by analyst John Bollinger in the 1980s. It consists of three lines plotted around a simple moving average to measure market volatility and identify overbought or oversold conditions.

  • Upper Band: 20-day SMA + (20-day standard deviation of price × 2)
  • Middle Band: 20-day Simple Moving Average (SMA)
  • Lower Band: 20-day SMA − (20-day standard deviation of price × 2)

When the bands widen, volatility is increasing — more trading opportunities. When bands narrow (squeeze), volatility is low and a breakout is likely approaching.

How to Use Bollinger Bands in Trading

  • Price near Lower Band: Potential buying opportunity if the band holds; breakdown signal if price breaks below.
  • Price near Upper Band: Potential selling opportunity if the band holds; breakout signal if price breaks above.
  • Bollinger Squeeze: Bands narrow — anticipate a high-momentum breakout or breakdown.
  • Upper Band Walk: Price consistently touches the upper band — strong uptrend in progress.
  • Lower Band Walk: Price consistently touches the lower band — strong downtrend in progress.
  • %B above 1.0: Price is above the upper band — overbought; watch for reversal.
  • %B below 0.0: Price is below the lower band — oversold; watch for bounce.

Bollinger Band Formulas

  • Upper Band = 20-day SMA + (20-day std dev × 2)
  • Middle Band = 20-day SMA
  • Lower Band = 20-day SMA − (20-day std dev × 2)
  • %B = (Price − Lower Band) / (Upper Band − Lower Band)
  • Bandwidth = (Upper Band − Lower Band) / Middle Band
